A recent study suggests that the formation of the future supercontinent Pangea Ultima in 250 million years could trigger a mass extinction of mammals and make most of the Earth uninhabitable.
An international research team led by Dr. Alexander Farnsworth of the University of Bristol has created a model of the future supercontinent Pangea Ultima, which is expected to form around the equator in about 250 million years. This event could increase sun exposure and carbon dioxide levels, potentially triggering widespread volcanism.
The researchers used a supercomputer to simulate the future climate of Pangea Ultima, including temperature, rain, wind and humidity. The models showed that substantial parts of the supercontinent could exceed a temperature of 40 °C, resulting in the mass extinction of mammals. In the worst case, at a CO2 content of 1.120 ppm, only 8% of the Earth’s surface would be habitable.
